First Impressions

Aside from Marketing, I also chose Economics in my pursuit of a better understanding of our economy. As a young girl, I craved nothing but adventure and the delight of having to explore something so unfamiliar to me―a deeper dive into Economics―was rather thrilling.

The first few chapters of the book were rather humorous as the economists were described by intriguing characterizations such as madmen, skeptics, and a tramp.

Upon reading, one might be intrigued by such characters "Why are they called like that?" I asked myself as I was preparing to read and outline some of the first chapters.

Let me share with you some of what I have learned

The Worldly Philosophers was a book about a handful of men aiming to incorporate the worldly pursuit of wealth into their philosophical scheme.

These Great Economists took the whole world as their subject and the matters they passionately debated are regarded with distant awe.

The identified economists are as follows:

● a philosopher — Adam Smith

● a parson — Thomas R. Malthus

● a stockbroker — David Ricardo

● a nobleman — Saint-Simon

● a madman — Charles Fourier

● a revolutionary — Karl Marx

● an aesthete — John Maynard Keynes

● a tramp — Henry George

● a skeptic — Thorstein Veblen

The introduction was rather brief yet gave me some sense of understanding of what was to be expected in the next few chapters.
